What is Synvisc?

Synvisc is an elastic and viscous substance made from hyaluronan which is found in normal joint fluid.

Important information about Synvisc

Synvisc (Hylan G-F 20) is similar to the fluid that surrounds the joints in your body. This fluid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber for the joints.

Synvisc (Hylan G-F 20) is used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis.

Indications for use

Synvisc is used to relieve knee pain due to OA. It is used for patients who do not get enough relief from simple painkillers, such as acetaminophen, or from exercise and physical therapy.

Warnings

Within 48 hours after injection, avoid, strenuous activities, jogging, power sports or standing for longer than 1 hour at a time.

What are possible side effects?

Synvisc may occur short-term pain, swelling at the injection site and / or the appearance of synovial exudate after injection. In some cases, exudation may be significant and cause more prolonged pain.

Contraindications

Synvisc is contraindicated in the presence of venous or lymph stasis on the side of the affected joint.
